Finding Balance With Your Meals While Traveling

The best diet for you is the one that supports your lifestyle, incorporates more Whole Foods, less sugary foods, and doesn’t feel like a diet!
Think of every traveling experience as an opportunity to reinforce your food habits! During small trips, vacations, events, celebrations, even mood swings, we must remember that this is a lifestyle! When we bring those habits with us and turn them into more of a lifestyle rather than a “diet”, that’s when we really see long-term progress and success.
For example, I’ve been in Springfield, Missouri for a CrossFit Competition, and as easy as it may be to fall off the nutritious food wagon and allow myself to lose sight of my goals, I’m determined to make smart food choices for my future self! During this travel time, I could just say “I’ll get on track after I get back” or “This will just be a treat meal” or even “I’m on vacation, this is when I get to let loose!” But even with these thoughts, I’m reminding myself of the lifestyle routines I’ve worked so hard to instill; that I can still make these times special and enjoyable without making decisions that are detrimental to my health and progress!
That’s the bigger picture we need to keep in mind while on this journey
To make life easier for you (and me) I have 3 key tips that you can start practicing while traveling to keep you on track:
- Don’t forget your water - This helps sugar cravings, hunger cues, energy, and hydration and is a simple habit we need to practice to make a difference
- Veggies have been and always will be important - I know you don’t wannnaaaa, but prioritizing these micronutrients in your main meals is often forgotten or not stressed and actually doe so much for your daily health and function. Check the menus in advance if you feel stressed making quick decisions and see how you can get at least 1-2 handfuls of these in your meals out to eat! Fun Fact: these also aid in additional hydration
- Bring ya snacks! They don’t need to be “balanced,” but having snacks available will definitely prevent overeating, bloating, and buying fried or sugary foods.
Building sustainable habits that will stick is the key to any long-term progress.
